ARQ Geotech (Pty) Ltd

Paul graduated with his B.Eng Civil Engineering degree in 2014 and continued his postgraduate studies in geotechnical engineering at the University of Pretoria. In 2015 he graduated with his B.Eng. Hons (Geotechnical Engineering) degree with distinction.
Subsequently, while continuing his postgraduate studies part-time he entered the field in 2016, cutting his teeth as a Site Engineer to the specialist geotechnical subcontractor Aveng Ground Engineering. During his time in construction, he has been in charge of numerous geotechnical construction projects ranging from geotechnical investigations to multi-million Rand infrastructure development contracts. He has gained experience in the areas of micro piling, open hole and CFA piling, grouting, soil nailing, shotcreting and ground anchorage.
In 2019 he joined ARQ Geotech as a Geotechnical Engineer where he fulfilled the role of geotechnical ARE for the Phase 2 upgrade of the Sani Pass. He was responsible for the design and site supervision of geotechnical aspects of the project including lateral support such as soil nails, shotcrete and gabions structures as well as reinforced earth fills on site.
In 2021 he joined ARQ headquarters in the tailings department where he is involved with stability assessments and advanced numerical analysis of tailings storage facilities. This includes advanced numerical assessments utilising critical state soil mechanics to assess potential for liquefaction resulting from potential triggers. He continues to assist the ARQ team with the design of micro piles, lateral support and reinforced earth structures using the experience he has gained on site and implementing various tools such as limit equilibrium and finite element analyses.
